According to the Central Bank, during the first six months of 2017 Russians spent RUB637.2 bln abroad using bank cards, which represents a RUB128 bln increase over the same period of 2016.  Orders in foreign online stores grow at a swift rate, too. During the six months the volume of such purchases increased by one third.

As reported by the Association of Internet Commerce Companies (AKIT), during the first six months Russians spent RUB178 bln to buy goods in foreign online stores, a 34% growth as compared to the same period of the previous year. In general, AKIT expects that the purchase amount will reach about RUB420 bln, i.e. RUB120 bln more than during the previous year.

Experts believe the increase in the purchase power is explained by the fact that the Russian economy has passed the crisis peak.

The most popular articles purchased abroad are clothes, footwear, smartphones, music and games. Most of the purchases (up to 88%) are made at Chinese sites. Experts say that if the ruble continues to strengthen and the incomes of households grow, the volume of purchases will increase.
