Two major retailers announced plans to beef up their staffs ahead of the holiday shopping season.
Target Corp., No. 16 in the Internet Retailer 2015 Top 500 Guide, announced in a blog post that it is planning to hire 70,000 seasonal employees. That’s in line with Target’s seasonal hiring the past two years.
CEO Brian Cornell told analysts on the retail chain’s Q2 2015 earnings call in August that the company will rely more on stores to fulfill online orders during the second half of the year. Target plans to more than triple the number of stores where it ships online orders, jumping to 450 locations from 140.
Meanwhile, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (No. 3), plans to hire 60,000 seasonal in-store employees to keep up with increased online, orders through Walmart.com, and offline demand this holiday season. That’s the same number of seasonal employees it hired last year.
“We are adding department managers in more than 3,500 stores for the holidays to specifically serve customers who are coming into the store to pick up their online orders,” said Judith McKenna, chief operating officer of Wal-Mart U.S. “We want to help people pick up their order and get back to the rest of their day as quickly as we can.”
A Wal-Mart spokesman tells Internet Retailer the company also plans to add an unspecified number of seasonal employees in its fulfillment centers across the country to keep up with the spike in holiday demand.
On Wednesday, Kohl’s Corp. (No. 22) and Toys ’R’ Us Inc. (No. 40) said they would add 69,000 and 40,000 mostly part-time employees, respectively, to handle online and offline orders.
In a separate announcement, Wal-Mart said it will open two e-commerce fulfillment centers in Florida, scheduled to come online next year. Those centers will employ 625 workers once completed.
