Residents of the country are increasingly cutting back on travel, spending vacations in their home country and organizing tours on their own.
During the summer of 2015 domestic Internet users generated about 70 million inquiries regarding travel and tourism that amounted to about 1.4% of all queries in the Yandex search engine, i.e. for the year passed since last summer the figure dropped almost by half.
"The wordings of searches show that the tourist market has seen two major changes since last year: first, people organize their travels on their own more often now, and secondly, they started to look for less expensive accommodation offers," - Yandex representatives say.
Being very popular places for spending summer holidays before, Moscow and St. Petersburg have been most affected. Samara especially lost its attractiveness for travelers, while interest in visiting Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Rostov-on-Don fell least of all.
With up to 4.19% of search queries about travel or vacations, Sochi still remains one of the most popular tourist destinations, followed by Moscow (2.57%) and Anapa (1.91%) closing the top three. Resorts of Crimea and the Krasnodar Territory generate half of all queries in Yandex.
The popularity rating of countries chosen as places to have a rest is headed by Russia (35% of the queries), with Turkey (12.3%), Egypt (7.5%), Greece (3.7%), Spain (3.4%) and Italy (3.1%) to follow.
