Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways' start date for participating in the oneworld frequent-flier alliance will be Oct. 30, the airline and the alliance revealed.

Qatar Airways announced on Oct.8, 2012, that it would join oneworld, with the integration process expected to take 12 to 18 months. That left frequent-fliers of oneworld's other member carriers anticipating exactly when they'd be able to start earning and redeeming their miles on Qatar Airways' flights.

That will be Oct. 30, following the announcement that Qatar Airways "received clearance to board oneworld after successfully completing a thorough review of its readiness, conducted by British Airways, which is sponsoring Qatar Airways' entry into the alliance, with oneworld's central team."

"Normally it takes around 18 months for any airline to be readied to enter any alliance," oneworld adds in its statement.

"From its first flights on Wednesday, 30 October, Qatar Airways will offer oneworld's full range of services and benefits," oneworld says.

With that, frequent fliers of other oneworld members — including American and British Airways — will be able to redeem miles for flights on Qatar Airways. They'll also be able to earn miles on most Qatar Airways flights.

Founded in 1993, Qatar Airways has grown quickly, flying to about 130 destinations in 70 countries from its hub in Doha. Oneworld says Qatar's route map will introduce more than 20 new destinations and five countries — Ethiopia, Iran, Rwanda, Serbia and Tanzania — to the oneworld network.

Qatar Airways entrance into the oneworld alliance was significant because it had one been one of just a handful of big airlines to remain independent of the three big alliances. The other alliances are SkyTeam — led in the USA by Delta — and the Star Alliance, which includes United and (for now) US Airways.

Qatar Airways also becomes the first of the three big "Gulf carriers" to join an alliance. Qatar, along with Gulf rivals Emirates and Etihad, have cultivated a reputation for high-end, luxurious service amid their rapid expansion during the past decade.

"In Qatar Airways' relatively short history, we have quickly established a reputation for innovation, quality and excellence in everything we do," Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker says in a release. "We are pleased to build on that by becoming the only major airline from the Gulf to date to be joining any of the global airline alliances. We are proud to entering the best of them, in oneworld — and to be doing so in record quick time."
