Pinterest Tries ‘Promoted Pins’

PinterestPinterest is laying the foundation to become a real business. The popular service to find and share (or “pin”) images on the Web said on Thursday that it will soon be testing “promoted pins.”

Like promoted posts on Facebook or Twitter, brands will be able to get special placement of their products in Pinterest’s search function and category feeds. For instance, if a user searches for skirts, Pinterest might show them a wool pencil skirt that’s on sale at an online retailer.

In a company blog post, Pinterest’s CEO Ben Silbermann said the company will not initially collect money from advertisers and will clearly mark promoted pins as ads.

“Nobody’s paying for anything yet—we want to see how things go and, more than anything, hear what you think,” he wrote in the post.

The test is the biggest step so far by Pinterest towards fleshing out a sustainable business model. Although it has attracted many of brands and users, it has been slow to introduce advertising. Analysts have wondered whether the service — which has become particularly popular for home decorating and fashion ideas — could introduce a novel way to advertise products online. But so far, it seems like Pinterest is just borrowing a page from its peers.
