Nike Inc. raced off to a strong start online during the first quarter of fiscal 2016.
Nike CEO Mark Parker told analysts on the athletic apparel manufacturer’s Q1 2016 earnings call that online sales grew 46% year over year globally on a constant-currency basis during the quarter. Nike, No. 61 in the Internet Retailer 2015 Top 500 Guide, does not break out online sales in its quarterly earnings reports.
In July, Nike shut its e-commerce site and mobile apps for almost a day to make unspecified improvements and technology upgrades. Parker didn’t disclose the impact those upgrades had on online sales, but he did say online conversion and mobile traffic increased during the quarter.
“Digital is an accelerator throughout Nike,” he told analysts, according to a transcript from Seeking Alpha. “Our digital ecosystem delivers a connected growing community, personal real-time engagement and easier access to the product they love head to toe. We stand alone because we connect all three to give the most holistic premium experience to the consumer. And when we serve the consumer better through digital, we drive growth.”
