This was stated by Khachatur Pombukhchan, company CFO, during a conference call with JP Morgan analysts.
The online store was launched in the test mode in Krasnodar. At the moment, about 100 employees of the retailer make orders on the website.
"The company adjusts [to the new sales channel] business processes and management to improve the economics of the project,” - JPMorgan report says. At the same time, a decision on the future prospects for the project will be taken somewhere in the middle of 2016.
Earlier, Sergei Galitsky, who owns Magnit, was fairly conservative about the e-commerce segment. In the spring of 2013, he said in an interview, that he did not believe in the success of such sales because of the one-time purchase logistics costs are unreasonably high: "While we have to sell additional 100 tonnes banana per day in order decrease the price by 2 rubles, very wealthy people alone will be able to afford it.”
However, starting from 2014, the company has been evaluating the new sales channels more closely. In the middle of last year, Magnit presented its own mobile app for iOs and Android, which helps find locations of the nearest stores, get information about promotion campaigns and create a shopping list without reference to a specific store’s assortment.
