John LewisJohn Lewis, the employee-owned department store chain, is moving into airport retailing with an outlet in Heathrow’s Terminal 2 due to open in June next year. The Heathrow opening is John Lewis’s latest move in stepping up its international ambitions, as the 3,600 square ft store will introduce it to a new set of global customers.

The retailer has already built up an international online operation, and now ships goods to 33 countries.
It has also developed an international wholesale business, after the successful trial of a shop within a South Korean department store – although it has played down the prospect of full John Lewis stores outside of the UK.

Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis said: “This opportunity at Heathrow perfectly complements and enhances these initiatives.” He added that it represented “a huge and exciting step forward in developing our international strategy, giving us access to one of the most concentrated, valuable and influential markets in the world”.

John Lewis is still evaluating whether to follow the Heathrow outlet with further airport stores.

Analysts at Verdict said: “John Lewis’s move into airport retailing provides it with a huge opportunity to raise its brand profile among international shoppers, making it as much a destination as Selfridges or Harrods.”.
Verdict forecasts that UK retail spending by overseas visitors this year will reach £9.7bn, up 51 per cent from 2008.

“While its premium department store competitors are key shopping destinations for overseas visitors to the UK, John Lewis is relatively unknown outside of its domestic market,” Verdict said.
