Macy’s Inc. is hiring more seasonal employees to work in its distribution centers this holiday season in anticipation of increasing online demand from consumers.
The retail chain, No. 5 in the Internet Retailer 2015 Top 500 Guide, announced that it is going to hire 12,000 employees to work in its fulfillment centers during the holiday season, up from 10,000 employees hired to fill those positions a year ago. Fulfillment center hiring also makes up a greater percentage of Macy’s seasonal hiring this year, with 14.1% of all seasonal employees hired working in fulfillment in 2015 compared with 11.6% last year.
Overall, Macy’s says it plans to add 85,000 seasonal employees this year, down slightly from the 86,000 it hired a year ago.
“This enhanced staffing allows us to provide additional help to customers, whether they are shopping in stores or online,” CEO Terry Lundgren said.
The holiday hiring surge comes about six weeks after Macy’s announced plans to step up its same-day delivery efforts in nine markets, charging customers who opt for the faster shipping an additional $5 on top of normal ground shipping rates.
