The Retail Companies Association and the National Union of Milk Producers have decided to fight counterfeit dairy products in retail stores.
A copy of the agreement to be signed by the two organizations in the near future has become available to mass media.
The decision was driven by the statement of Rosselkhoznadzor (the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance) according to which 80% of cheese and products containing milk in the domestic market are counterfeit. This statement hit the retail chains causing a sizeable drop in sale of cheese and milk products.
"Such statements of inspection authorities damage the industry, especially considering that the actual volume of counterfeit dairy products, depending on the product group, is 10-12%; for cheese it is up to 25%", Andrey Danilenko, head of the National Union of Milk Producers, said.
The Retail Companies Association and the National Union of Milk Producers plan to perform regular audits and collect product samples for laboratory testing. The organizations do not intend to confiscate products unless the milk product manufacturers commit violations systematically and are reluctant to remedy them.
