Airports may lose one of their profitable lines of businessesStarting from July 1, the border crossing procedure for passengers of VIP lounges at Russian airports will change: passport control and pre-flight inspection of passengers are to be performed under a common standard procedure. Respective instructions from the FSB were received by the airports’ border service offices. “Illegibility of the provided services” was named the reason for such move.

The airports’ VIP lounge booking portal informs that passengers and their luggage can still be registered in the VIP room, but they will now have to pass through passport control and pre-flight inspection under a standard procedure.

According to a source at one of the airports, the ban on provision of border crossing control services in VIP lounges can deprive airports of their profitable business. "This may result in a job cut for up to 500 airport employees, while tax deductions to the budget may drop down to RUB1 billion” he says. The average monthly income from passenger services provided at one VIP lounge may exceed 10 million rubles.
